Premier’s Reading Challenge

Premier’s Reading Challenge News from Mrs Mitchell in the Library

The Premier’s Reading Challenge has started at Edgeworth PS in Week 2 (February 2). Mrs Topic, Miss Wingrove and I have been encouraging children to begin reading and recording their books on a paper reading log. I have some spare reading logs available in the library for those students who missed out. The PRC site is now operational  (March 2) so I can register children who are taking up the reading challenge.

This involves K to 2 children reading independently, with parents or being read to by parents, depending on the reading ability of the children. Their goal is to read 30 books (25 of which must be on the reading list) by August 14. Years 3 to 4 and 5 to 6 should be reading 20 books (at least 15 from the lists) independently.   If a series of books (e.g. Zac Power stories) is read by a student, the first two books can be counted on the PRC list and another 5 can be counted as own choice.

Parents can enter their children’s book identification numbers directly onto their child’s electronic reading log if the child knows his/her DET portal username and password. Alternatively when the reading log is complete, please bring it to me in the library and I will enter the books and give the student a Spotlight award.  When any student completes the challenge, I must also validate their entries even if the log was completed electronically at home.

Here is an example of how to fill in the reading log.

The PRC ID number is often on a sticker on the book but if it is a book from home or another library, go to the New South Wales Premier’s Reading Challenge at https://products.schools.nsw.edu.au/prc/home.html and look up the booklist section by title or author or in the search box. There are some very keen students who have already begun recording…our aim this year is to beat last year’s record…156 students completing the challenge.  Happy reading!
